Neighbors helping neighbors–this is what Firewise USA® is all about. Inspired Neighbors act to make their neighborhood safer
VERG Neighborhood Leaders Bob and Avis Licht knew their neighbors were concerned about neighborhood fire hazards, and everyone agreed that private property and common areas needed cleanup.
Inspired by their involvement in Firewise, they took the initiative to coordinate the cleanup of vegetation and clearing overhanging tree limbs. Knowing that it was more efficient to do all the work at once instead of neighbors working individually, they organized a crew to do the entire area in a day. For private property, homeowners paid separately, common areas were divided equally.
The project took advantage of the free chipper day to eliminate costs for chipping and hauling. The resulting fee for common area cleanup was nominal, and the work done for individual homeowners was far less expensive because of their planning and coordination.
Now Salix Ave is completely cleared of dead grass, branches, poison ivy, growth around propane tanks, and scotch broom, and there are no overhanging branches on the road. It has never looked better or been safer. Everyone is thrilled.

Late Breaking Update for Monday, August 24th
This is just for information purposes. There is NO THREAT to San Geronimo Valley.
Per Marin County Fire Department directly to VERG, there is an evacuation order for Silverhill, Fox Drive and Noren Way, south of Inverness Park. The order was made with an “abundance of caution” as the wind has shifted. There is an evacuation center established at the Marin County Civic Center for those who do not have alternative lodging.
The fire is still within the park and I have been assured that there is no threat to the San Geronimo Valley. Should things change, we will be notified well in advance. We will likely continue to be effected by smoke which is to be expected.

Woodward Fire Basecamp Relocates to San Geronimo
Officials involved with the Woodward Fire are relocating the Incident Command Post and Basecamp to 5800 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in San Geronimo, former site of San Geronimo Golf Course. In a fire response, such basecamps are strategically located to serve an incident and the communities. The first base camp location – the site of the Point Reyes National Seashore Visitor Center in Olema – was an ideal location at the start of the incident. By August 23, it was within the evacuation warning area. Relocating a basecamp to outside a potential evacuation zone is not an unusual practice and ensures critical response resources are ready to respond to changing needs of the fire. The basecamp personnel appreciate the patience and support of the communities that are impacted by the wildfire and the associated impacts from supporting the fire.
